There’s an obesity epidemic happening in our country. Unfortunately some of its victims also happen to be the youngest citizens of our country. There are so many reasons that contribute to our youth being overweight. We can point to them as parents or even look at them from an outside point of view. The reality is that nothing will change unless we do something about it. One of the biggest contributors to why our children are overweight is that they watch too much TV and are involved in too little activity. So how can you get your kids up off the couch and outside exercising instead?
Make it Fun for Them
If you try to turn exercise into a chore, kids will never stick with it. If they even perceive exercise to be something unenjoyable or that they don’t want to do, you can kiss the opportunity goodbye. As a parent, it’s important to make exercise fun for your kids. You need to show them that going outside to perform fun activities is something that they can look forward to. They need to be able to embrace it or they won’t stick with it for the long haul. Particularly when you are trying to take away something as enjoyable as the TV or video games, you need to replace it with something fun that they can look forward to.
Lead by Example
If you are sitting in front of the TV every free moment, then you can expect your kids to follow suit. It’s important that as parents we show them what to do and lead by example. So every opportunity that you have, you need to show them what a priority exercise is to you and they will start to learn the lesson. Show them that exercise can be fun and should be an important part of your life. This is the best and healthiest example you can provide, and one that will stick with them for a lifetime. Get yourself off the couch and your kids are sure to follow in your footsteps.
Get Them Involved
If you let the kids choose what sort of activities they can get engaged in, this will make a big impact. There are so many things in life that are selected for them, let this be their opportunity to pick things out for themselves. Not only will they be more inclined to stick with it if they can get involved in picking what sort of activities they are engaged in, but they may very well get excited about it too. Let them pick family activities that you can all do together and that will work tremendously well. If you want to get your kids up off the couch and outside exercising, these are the best and most effective ways to do so.
