Pet Carriers – How to Choose One for your Dog

Friday, May 20th, 2011

As a dog owner, the chances are good that you are interested in looking at pet carriers so that you can take your dog along with you when you travel. There are all types of pet carriers on the market and they come in many sizes.

The most common types of pet carriers are hard-shelled carriers with handles. These carriers can be purchased at large discount department stores, in pet stores and online. They typically have doors on both ends, large side windows and a small lid on top that you can use to reach in to pet your dog. Another common type of pet carrier is made of a flexible material such as microfiber. These pet carriers come in many sizes and they typically feature several ventilation windows, shoulder straps and removable food trays and bedding pads. Some of the larger soft-sided pet carriers feature wheels which makes transporting your dog through busy airports or train stations easy.

Be sure that the pet carrier you buy is large enough for your dog. He/she should be able to stand up and turn around inside the carrier. Pet carriers for commercial airline use must be approved by the airline you will be using so be sure to check with the airline regarding its regulations before making a purchase.
